President’s Message
by Brad J. Uren, MD
Strategic Planning Process a Success
In April, the Executive Council of the Washtenaw County Medical Society (WCMS) came together at the WCMS headquarters for the second part of our two step strategic planning process.
Together, we evaluated and reworked the mission and vision statements of WCMS. The long term goals and vision for WCMS were charted for the next 3-5 years, and it is this vision that will guide us as we move forward in this next phase of changes in health care in this country. The Executive Council met again in May to review and approve the strategic plan. Watch for more detailed information in the
coming months.
I am grateful to the Executive Council, committee chairs, and those who gave their time to attend those two days. I believe the meetings were very productive, was gratified by the enthusiasm of all those involved, and a lot of great ideas were suggested. It was a successful process and I was
proud to be a part of it.
“Certain things, they should stay the way they are. You ought to be able to stick them in one of those big glass cases and just leave them alone.”
– J.D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye
Identified at that meeting was one of our most significant challenges, the need to engage physicians, both members and non-members, as well as the community at large, to demon- strate the value of membership in WCMS. It is therefore imperative that we continue to stress that the work we do has value. We must persist in demonstrating to physicians, the pub- lic, and policy makers how much value we add to our community.
One main focus of the strategic plan is to ensure a better synergy of our efforts so that information about what we do every day is better gathered, presented, and distributed to the membership, media, public, and policy makers. This is the foundation of demonstrating the value of our work as we enter a new
uncertain time and begin to navigate the sea of change before us.
I invite you all to attend the next Executive Council meeting. We will continue discussing objectives developed from the strategic plan. Many of the WCMS committees will also be meeting soon and begin to work on objectives in line with the new strategic plan. If you would like to participate in one of the committee meetings, please contact the society office for times and specifics.
I hope to see you there.
