  COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Influenza (as of April 3, 2018): Influenza continues to circulate in Washtenaw County at moderate levels, with a surge in activity over the past several weeks, largely caused by Influenza B. Flu-related hospitalizations increased last week. More hospitalizations have occurred this season for Washtenaw residents than in any flu season in the past decade.

Hepatitis A: Michigan Outbreak: Transmission appears to be through direct person-to-person spread and illicit drug use. Those with history of injection and non-injection drug use, homelessness or transient housing, and incarceration are thought to be at greater risk in this outbreak setting. No common sources of food, beverages, or drugs have been identified as a potential source of infection. Notably, this outbreak has had a high hospitalization rate.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE: The Opioid Epidemic The total number of overdoses (deaths plus ED admissions) for 2017 are 34% higher than those for 2016. By 2017, the number of overdoses nearly doubled to 6.5 overdoses per week. While opioid related overdose deaths increased moderately (8%) between 2016 and 2017, ED admissions for unintentional opioid related overdoses increased 43% during that same time period. Nearly 3/4 of opioid overdose related deaths have been associated with synthetic opioids. In 2017, 71% were associated with synthetic opioids, such as Fentanyl and Carfentanil.
