General Session on Gender Dysphoria
ender Dysphoria was the topic discussed at the General Session of the WCMS on November 16, 2016. The speakers were Daniel Shumer, MD,
MPH, a pediatric endocrinologist newly arrived at University of Michigan, who specializes in gender identity problems and management, and John Randolph, MD, a gynecologist best known for his work in assisted reproductive technology, but who also has many years of experience with gender reaffirming surgery at University of Michigan.
Dr. Shumer trained under Norman Spack, MD,
one of the pioneers in the study of gender dysphoria.
Dr. Shumer’s presentation offered many insights into gender identity and dysphoria, and gave me a completely new and much better understanding of this rare and widely misunderstood condition.
Here are his key points:
1. Gender identity refers to one’s deeply felt internal
sense of oneself as boy or girl, man or woman, or somewhere else on a gender spectrum.
